Why a compendium?
The name ‘compendium’ means ‘handbook’ or ‘guide’ and comes from the Latin word ‘compendium’, which can be translated into German as ‘shortcut’. This literal meaning very aptly describes an important quality of this book: the HPL Compendium offers readers a comparatively short but effective way to discover and understand the tremendous qualities and possibilities of HPL (High-Pressure Laminate). Qualities and possibilities that have continued to grow with this material system for high-quality, durable and decorative surfaces since its invention almost a hundred years ago. This has also led to a significant expansion of its areas of application. HPL has proven itself to be a decorative surface which, even in its standard grade, meets a great many of the demands of modern interior and exterior design. Where the standard grade is not sufficient, the range of special HPL grades provides individual, attractive solutions.
In this compendium, the terms HPL, HPL Compact and HPL composite elements are used to refer to the HPL material system. Other terms that are frequently used in addition include decorative laminate, laminate, laminated sheet, decorative high-pressure laminate sheets, etc.
What does the HPL Compendium contain?
The HPL Compendium essentially consists of three parts. The first part presents and explains the material system. It contains information on the history, manufacture and properties of HPL. The middle part deals with the bonding of HPL to substrate materials and the necessary processing and fabrication steps, as well as the further processing of the resulting composite panels. The third part finally makes it clear why HPL is such an outstanding decorative material, particularly in today’s world. This section is aimed specifically at architects and designers. Whether in domestic interiors, laboratories, shopfitting, damp and wet rooms, façade design or even shipbuilding, HPL is an exciting, modern and versatile material. Information on its environmental properties, along with further technical details in the appendix, rounds off the publication.

Since its first printed edition in 2019, the HPL Compendium has already garnered significant attention and recognition both within and outside the industry and has now been published in five different languages.With the publication of the updated, digital HPL Compendium (initially in German), we are filling an important gap and creating a central source of knowledge for everyone who works with HPL or is interested in the material – ensuring they always have the content to hand. It is a living project that grows with the industry and is constantly updated.
